I am delighted to let you know that I have just been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), for services to environmental awareness and fundraising. The recipients of this award, announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, are chosen by the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office on the advice of the Head of the Civil Service and the Main Honours Committee. It’s especially exciting to be honoured in this year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

The MBE is the humblest of the honours, the others being (in ascending order) the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire), CBE (Commander of the etc), with the highest honours being KBE (Knight) for men or DBE (Dame) for women.

Sometime in the next 7 months I’ll be invited to an investiture. There is more information about the investiture online. The medals are presented by the Queen, Prince Charles, or the Princess Royal. I’ll be sure to let you know when I’m on my way to Buckingham Palace!

My mother and I have known about it since a letter arrived at Mum’s house in early May, but it is a condition of the process that we had to keep it top secret until the Honours were publicly announced. I can’t tell you how hard it has been to keep it to ourselves! I confess that a tiny number of very close confidantes might possibly have had an inkling that the award was in the pipeline, but we’ll just have to put that down to telepathy. 🙂

Congratulations to all the other people honoured today, for all kinds of amazing and significant work that varies from entrepreneurship to hospices to heritage to the Olympics. Sometime in the next few days I’ll post a blog about some of the other people named in this year’s Birthday Honours. For now I’m just hoping I get to go to the Palace on the same day as the awesome singer Adele, also receiving an MBE – I just love her voice!

I am, of course, over the moon about receiving this accolade – and determined, as ever, to continue my endeavours for sustainability. With our environmental challenges growing more urgent every day, this is no time to rest on my laurels!

  • Congratulations, Roz!

I <3 this most: "… over the moon about receiving this accolade – and determined, as ever, to continue my endeavours for sustainability. With our environmental challenges growing more urgent every day, this is no time to rest on my laurels!"

And for the umpteenth time, thanks again for your continuing inspiration ;-D

  • Hugely exciting, congratulations Roz! So happy for you, you deserve this, and much more besides. Roll on Dame Roz!

    • Haha! Thanks, Caroline. Not quite up to the Damehood yet, but working on it! 🙂
Hope to see you in London sometime soon.

  • Hurray Roz for all that you have done and all that you are doing – but you really don’t need any awards to make a difference. The recognition is nice but I hope you also realise and use the opportunity to further your cause and your message over and above the pat on the back.

  • Congratulations, Roz. It’s excellent news that you are becoming so much more recognized now in Great Britain after being so active in the USA.

  • Congratulations, Roz! This honor is absolutely well-deserved and I think you have your priorities right in hoping to be at the same ceremony as Adele–she is the queen of awesome singing and you are the queen of oceans–the other queen, well, she’s just a queen of a little empire!

  • Thanks for all the kind comments, both here and on Facebook. So happy to be able to share this good news with you! 🙂

  • Huge congratulations on your MBE! What an excellent acknowledgement of all you have done. No doubt you are spurred on to bigger and better things. We are very lucky to have you supporting us at Greener upon Thames

  • Congratulations Roz on this great honour recognizing your work and the incredible challenges that you have taken on and overcome. Well deserved recognition and we are very proud of you!

    • Awwww, thanks, Russell!

Howard and I really wish we could be in Vancouver for your marriage to Christine tomorrow evening. We’ll certainly be thinking of you – if not exactly at the time that the ceremony takes place (4.45am our time!), then as soon as we wake up after that!
