Today I listened to “Even the Sun Will Die“, an interview with the spiritual teacher and author of “The Power of Now”.A Dip in the OceanSarah Outen‘s book about her Indian Ocean crossing, and notice that she looped the loop a couple of times hereabouts, which makes me feel marginally better. Not that her misfortune helps me, but somehow it’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only one to have wiggled and wobbled at this stage of the crossing.

Other Stuff:

Thank you so much for all the jokes. VERY much appreciated. Who knew there were so many comedians out there?! In fact, we were so overwhelmed by the response, and we didn’t want me incapacitated by mirth, that Aimee is going to ration out the jokes and send them to me one or two per day, along with the selection of your comments that she already emails to me on a daily basis.

Molly McCallum – your email about your skydiving had me in hysterics. What a fantastic mental image! I can’t wait to see the video, although it will be hard pushed to improve on the visual that my imagination has already produced courtesy of your description. Thanks for cheering me up in adversity, and I hope to see you and Roger in La La La Pine next time I am in the US.

Quote, apropos of my repeated attempts to row out of this part of the ocean: Insanity is doing the same thing while expecting a different result. (Albert Einstein)

On the other hand, I may as well keep rowing: Industry is the enemy of melancholy. (William F Buckley)

Daniel Gallacher, Richard Hyman – encouraging Roz to regain some of those lost miles.

  • good luck with the winds and currents!!!…..maybe you should row in the opposite direction for a day or so to see if you get nearer your destination!
    David

  • Yes, but what a beautiful environment in which to do the same thing over again!
Seriously, I’m hoping for some helpful wind for you (not the type I’ve been having all week after not cooking the chickpeas properly!)

  • Roz, Eckhart Tolle is one of my favorite authors. Just the thought of the title: “A New Earth” gives me hope. In fact when I was tweeting Oprah about you I said that Roz could be a big part of “A New Earth.” (She was very into the book–had 10 weeks of podcasts with Tolle, amazing stuff which is still on her website.)
Yes, like you say, it’s  easy to “fall off the wagon,” this awareness of the present moment is fleeting at best, but it’s nice to know that it’s there. Always.

    • Hiya Susie,  Thanks for posting Roz’s info on facebook that is how I found out about her.  Is that drawing of the wee doggie yours.  It’s great.   Thanks,   Stephen Stewart

  • Your current travels remind me of the lyrics to “The Windmills of Your Mind” from the movie “The Thomas Crown Affair”:

“Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
    Never ending or beginning,
    On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
    Or a carnival balloon
    Like a carousel that’s turning
    Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
    Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind.”

You’re doing wonderfully.  All this circling and spiraling will end eventually, and suddenly you’ll be “free” and speeding along to your destination.  Sometimes it “seems” like we’re stuck, when it’s really just part of the process.  Row on!  You’re amazing!

  • Roz, you are a source of continued strength and encouragement …

    emotions and thoughts

    like clouds drifting ‘cross mind
    sky

just watch them float byRow ethereally, Roz

  • Love the idea that is behind the quote:  Industry is the enemy of melancholy.  My grandmother always said: If you can’t decide what to do, just do whatever comes next.  In other word, just keep moving and before you know you’ve accomplished a great deal and your outlook is brighter!  Cheers!

  • Hey Roz, Have you ever been invited to a wine and cheesecake party?
Well you are being invited to one now… invitation will remain open.

The Cheesecake Factory has 58 different types of cheesecake. I always dream of having just a niblet of each one…

Guests rsvp their attendance. Via email, they pick out and pay for the one slice that they have picked out. I make sure that no two are picked the same, suggesting other flavors if this happens. People chip in a few extra dollars to cover inexpensive wines.(total of ten to twelve dollars US will usually do it)

I will have pre-warned the manager of restaurant several days a head of time. The afternoon prior to the event, I show up with small notes to label the individual pieces and several platters (so as to not use the take-home plastic containers).

Guests arrive with one paper bag of metal forks (name labeled) and one empty paper bag for the forks ones used (also labeled). And a glass for the wine (suggestions for not bringing the finest of stemwares)

The guests help in spreading out the pieces along the table’s edge while scoping out what they would like to taste first… the corkage is done, and as soon as the toast is hailed (to you) then we start the wine and cheesecake party!

For charity’s sake, I will not list all of the flavors here…

Thai food, Cajun/creole, cheeses (back east, with your friend Margaret:), even different types of salads (thinking Portland here for some reason:) can be done in similar fashion!

When you get back to the Bay Area give me a warning ping and we’ll do one at the Dolphin Club/ South End Rowing Club!

    Row Roz Row!

Roz Solidarity Sunset is due next Saturday August 13, details to follow next week.

Yay! Roz *jumping up and down for you:)*

  • Today on my birthday , I send you my piece of chocolate delight.
Don’t hesitate, friends with plates are lining up fast!  Yes the flavor is not the same or as
satisfying as icing on your own lips. Hey – fedex wants a boat full of gold to
deliver cake to the middle of the ocean. Ok Roz , your worth it. First – I put
in a call to the mother in charge of weather and wind. She gets what you are
doing and said – “ok enough is enough, the blond with biceps is not going to
stop”. So look for the weather and current to turn your way .

So thoughts to you on your journey yet finished.

There are many who think beyond their limits,

Some spend and talk past their knowledge,

You dear Roz , do not know any borders ,

    Wise to never say never,

Stepping past lines before they are drawn,

Each day you rearrange and cast old shadows overboard,

With each sunrise- a clean slate yet to be filled with Savage
    colors,

And more spare laughs than a 101 comedy clubs,

Every oar stroke is a brick removed from the wall of “what’s
    next”?,

And becomes a brick in the path yet taken,

When the sun sets, you rest …. And ready your soul for teaching,

Not telling tales but helping others find their inner dream
    yet explored,

     What a gift to yourself,
    and to us!

Making up rules , only to break them before the ink in your
    mind  dries,

Keep pushing the edge and coloring beyond the rainbows,

You have miles till you land with your toes in the sand,

We are thinking of you , when you think of the planet,

That’s how flow goes. We feel it, you feel it, keep moving ,

Keep dreaming . Hope Rita is feeling better and stronger.

Do I pods leave tan lines? Shooting stars your way.

    Bsavage

  • Roz, on Day 42 bit.ly/RozOzDay-42 you mentioned: “Tomorrow I should slingshot out of the top. Hurrah!” … so I am now conjuring up a big device to catapult you out of that “dip in the ocean” that has you in its grip.

Googling “boat catapult” I discovered Catapult Catamaran so there is hope!

With all the iMaginatory iPowers iCan iMuster, iVisualize your being catapulted out and away from the dismally drippy dipression … and over the waves to a foamy soft surfy sploosh westward …

    Row relaxed, Roz!

  • Did you hear the one about the blonde and the Bentley? No one was laughing after a flaxen-haired woman driving the vehicle more associated with royalty than road crashes is alleged to have struck a Mercedes Benz and three other luxury cars before being forced to stop.
The crash occurred when the woman drove her $403,000 blue Bentley Azure down the main route of Place du Casino in Monaco into a $121,000 Mercedes Benz S Class, a $231,000 Ferrari 430, a $242,000 Aston Martin Rapide  and a $129,000 Porsche 911.
The driver and her passenger were not hurt, but became trapped in the car, not from the damage, but from curious onlookers and tourists snapping photos.
Most of the cars needed new bumpers or front wings. The estimated total for repairs so far was $161,000.
Total value of the cars in the pile-up was $1.2 million.
Roz, this just happened in the (google)news… sad and funny in many ways including timing, but I thought I would share it. Hoping one day they will all be electric, solar and wind powered with all recyleable parts,,,, well one could dream…pics are all over the internet. …upon your return… and on a brighter note… Chicago is trying to go plastic bag free!Row Roz Row!

  • Roz – StinsonBeach here.

“…but then I fall off the spiritual wagon…”

Why do you suppose that is? Maybe because that disquiet you feel when you “do” the reality-of-the-moment-thing is more like denial (please understand that is not an accusation. It is merely a comment.)  It’s really simple enough. It is NOT an either / or proposition. You don’t have to like it AND you don’t have to kick the cat.

Go to Bolinas & watch the sunset over the same ocean you now find yourself.
