Marine Creatures
Roz's boat has been tagged by the TOPP programme - the Tagging Of Pacific Pelagics - in which tiny data-gathering devices have been attached to sharks, seals, turtles, whales and other marine creatures to track their movements. By looking at the TOPP website you will be able to see not only where Roz is, but also what other wildlife is in her bit of the ocean.
1. For the first 14-21 days of Roz's row, Roz will be visible only on this map that mostly the researchers use.
2. After she has been rowing for two or three weeks, she will be on two maps: a dot on the page above, and a rowboat icon on the home page of TOPP.org. The reason we have to wait two or three weeks to appear on the TOPP home page, is because that map is animated and tracks the animals through a couple of years. When Roz gets a little bit of a track behind her, she will appear as more than a blip that comes and goes faster than the eye can see.
3. As soon as Roz leaves, TOPP will start blogging her, and using images from the researchers' map to show where she is.
4. Once the rowboat icon appears on the TOPP.org home page map, there will also be a Roz widget. Just as people can download the code to put the turtle, shark and elephant seal widgets on their blogs and MySpace pages, they'll be able to do the same with Roz's widget. The widget will update every day with a "message" from Roz, saying how far she's rowed and how fast she's going.
